To simplify slightly, in anger, we are upset and blame others; in guilt and shame, we are upset and blame ourselves; in depression, we are upset and blame life itself. Some of these words can be used in multiple contexts, and of course we have many other words we can use to attribute blame. The ones in this group are especially tricky as they can be used after “I feel…” and they combine pain and blame in one word, so they are partly describing a feeling and partly a judgment. Separating and transforming the implicit judgments allows the emotional component to resolve into a pure feeling (such as sadness, relief, etc). Here are some of the most common examples:
